Over a third of US and UK consumers say they’re less likely to buy from brands using AI in ads (CivicScience), and IAB’s 2026 research with Sonata Insights shows trust falls further still when AI involvement is disclosed. Closer to home, a recent YouGov survey found just 21% of Britons trust AI in retail settings. Brands are feeling it: McDonald’s pulled a Christmas campaign after it was labelled “AI slop”, while Coca-Cola ran two AI holiday ads and took similar backlash.


What initially felt like a hugely cost-effective tool has turned out to be a bit of a poison chalice. But the problem isn’t generative AI itself. It’s lazy AI: machine output dumped where an audience can tell that human craft used to be, especially where emotion matters. The McDonald’s ad wasn’t hated because it was technically poor. It was hated because nobody who’d actually experienced Christmas was on screen, and the audience could feel that. Researchers have a name for this now: the “AI-authorship effect”. When consumers believe an emotional message was written by a machine, they judge it as less authentic, feel a flicker of moral disgust, and disengage. Even when the content itself is identical to a human-made version. The penalty is paid for the perception, not the output.


Sprout Social’s 2026 Pulse Survey found 56% of social media users now report seeing AI slop “often” or “very often” in their feeds, and platforms are responding accordingly: Instagram’s algorithm now actively penalises overly polished synthetic content, and Pinterest has added filters to let users hide AI-generated material entirely.
